1. Hull – A City Almost Below Sea Level
Hull stands out as one of the most flood‑vulnerable cities in the UK. Approximately 90% of Hull is below the high-tide line, and it lacks natural protection from the Humber Estuary. The area is at extreme risk of flooding from tides, storm surges, surface water, and groundwater. In fact, only about 2% of the city’s land is considered safe from flooding.
Why this matters in autumn: Wet autumn storms can further raise water levels in the estuary, overwhelming limited defences and triggering serious flooding in Hull.
